A Creative Glass of Bourbon — 4 Ideas for Bourbon Cocktails

Bottoms up! It’s time to enjoy these hand-selected bourbon cocktails that'll have your friends fishing for invites. While bourbon is best known for being the key ingredient in a traditional mint julep, there’s so much else the spirit has to offer. Here’s how you can use it the next time you’re entertaining.

A Kentucky mule with a straw

Sam Liquor Store has a wide and coveted range of gins, wines, vodkas, and more available online. Amongst the top-notch range of whiskey brands, you'll find some great choices for barrel-aged bourbon.

Check out our exclusive line of first-rate liquor, and don't miss the silky Courage and Conviction Bourbon Cask that has touches of cinnamon, vanilla, and orange.

The Frosted Maple Sour

Here's what you'll need:

  • 4 tablespoons of bourbon
  • 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup
  • Orange peel for the garnish
  • Maraschino cherries for character

Simply combine all of the above in a cocktail shaker, and shake it with ice until it's chilled.  We recommend a lowball glass, with a sliver of orange peel. As far as cherries go, add them to your heart's content to finish the drink off.

The Kentucky Mule

Break out the copper, it's time for the Moscow mule, but Americanized—better known as the Kentucky mule. The 4th of July might be a long way off, but hey, there's no day like today to be a patriot. Here's what you'll need:

  • A quarter cup of the good stuff (bourbon)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • Half a cup of ginger beer
  • Ice, mint leaves, and a lime wedge for garnish

Technically you can serve a mule however you like, but bonus points for a hammered copper mug. All you have to do is mix the ingredients with a stirrer, add the garnishes, serve it before the ice melts.

Collins, John Collins

A descendant of the respectable Tom Collins, this tall drink of icy goodness is just as much for the eyes as the palate. Here's what you'll need:

  • 4 tablespoons of bourbon
  • Half a tablespoon of simple sugar syrup
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 4 ounces of soda water
  • Ice
  • Maraschino cherries and a lemon wheel to garnish

Mix the ingredients in a highball glass, adding the soda water last. Skewer the garnishes on a toothpick and lay them on the rim. For that extra special American touch, add a red and white straw with an umbrella.

The Bourberry Smash

This velvet-berry drink is easy enough considering how lip-smackingly delicious it is. Grab these ingredients, and plan a dinner party, because, with drinks like this, it's a crime not to share the recipe:

A quarter lime cut into 2 wedges

  • 8 blackberries
  • 5 mint leaves
  • 4 tablespoons of the finest bourbon you can get your hands on
  • 1 tablespoon of maple syrup
  • Soda water, if you like
  • Crushed ice

Drop the berries and mint leaves into your cocktail shaker and muddle them gently. Add the rest, sans soda water, and shake it until blended. Serve it on crushed ice and add the soda water, only if the spirit moves you.

A whisky drink in a lowball glass
